BHS goes green
Food Industry Technical has installed its demand based ventilation system into a trial site at Swindon.
The results taken so far have been very convincing, reducing BHS's kitchen ventilation energy consumption by 60% and giving them a 1.25 year payback.
The trial has been so successful BHS are looking to role out the energy saving system to 5 more stores with subsequent stores thereafter. |

Food Industry Technical secures Hilton Hotel roll-out
After a successful installation of 30 hotels, during the period of 2005/2006, Hilton Hotels have now rolled-out Intelli-Hood to a further 7 properties.
Hilton Hotels made considerable savings by reducing the fan speed to match the required ventilation, and in the process made savings on both their energy consumption and energy costs. In the Hilton Birmingham Metropole alone Hilton has saved up to £12000 per year off their electricity bill giving them a payback of just over a year.
The new roll-out includes hotels in Glasgow, Sheffield and Warwick along with others all over the UK.
Hilton Hotels have also seen the benefits of including Intellli-Hood in their Energy Management Programme in Europe and have recently installed a system in La Defense, France.

Tesco Ireland’s Energy Commitment
Tesco Ireland have followed in Tesco UK's footsteps and rolled out Intelli-Hood to 30 of their stores. Tesco Ireland saw the success of Tesco UK's portfolio and decided to get behind their commitment to reduce Tesco's Carbon Footprint by 50% by 2020.
A trial was done in Tesco Clonmel, Co. Tipperary to evaluate the amout of savings to be made and the result was considerable. They have saved 70% of ventilation fan energy consumption resulting in a 1.51 year pay back. To view the full case study of Tesco Clonmel click here

Climate change bill unveiled
A blueprint for tackling climate change - setting legally binding targets for cutting carbon dioxide emissions - was unveiled by the Government today.
The government's plans include:
Targets to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2050 and between 26% and 32% by 2020.
Greater energy efficiency, with more consumers becoming "producers" of their own energy at home.
Investment in low-carbon fuels and technologies, such as carbon capture and storage, wind, wave and solar power.
Carbon "budgets", which cap emissions levels, set every five years.
The government reporting annually to Parliament on its progress in controlling emissions.
Creating an independent body to advise on the setting of carbon budgets
Giving ministers powers to make future policies to control emissions "quicker and easier to introduce". |

Food Industry Technical receive their Guide Dog Puppy
Due to the money raised for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Food Industry Technical are able to sponsor a puppy in the local area. So far enough money has been raise to sponsor the puppy for the year it will be with its puppy walker and, as the amount is still rising, it looks like Food Industry Technical will be able to continue sponsoring it through its training.
The good news came just before Christmas saying a female Golden Retriever/Labrador cross was born on the 11th November and would be homed with Dawn Valvona, a puppy walker of 7years in Ash Vale near Food Industry Technical’s office in Finchampstead, Berkshire.
After much consideration the staff at Food Industry Technical named the puppy Layla. She move in with Dawn on the 12th January and will be with her until she is ready to start her Guide Dog training in about a year’s time. While she stays with Dawn she will learn basic commands like sit, slow, walk, as well as stopping in front of doors and stairs, and walking in front of her owner. This will put her in good stead for her Guide Dog training when she will learn to lead and navigate a blind or partially sighted person.

Tesco's £100m to develop sustainable low-carbon technology
On the 18th January 2007 Sir Terry Leahy gave a speech claming Tesco will reduce the carbon footprint of their existing stores and distribution centres around the world by 50% by 2020 and will be contributing £100m to developing sustainable low-carbon technology.
Tesco have been considering the effects of its stores on the environment and how to reduce them for many years. In 2001-2005 Tesco installed Intelli-Hood, our energy saving ventilation system, in their bakeries, rotisseries, and staff and customer restaurants, throughout the UK.
To date Intelli-Hood has been installed in 450 UK Tesco stores, 750 systems, and due to the savings made Tesco are in the process of rolling out the system in Europe.
Patrick Jubb, UK Engineering Manager says;
"Food Industry Technical has carried out over 400 Intelli-Hood installations for Tesco with professional planning and effective delivery in one of the smoothest rollouts of a product we have experienced for a long time".
Reducing a company's carbon footprint is not a new idea but due to the media coverage it has come into the for-front of peoples minds. Everybody is asking themselves if there is something they can do to help reduce the effects our living is having on future generations, and Intelli-Hood is a proven method for the catering industry.

New Fire Safety Laws
New fire safety rules affecting all commercial premises in England and Wales came into force on 1 October 2006. Fire certificates will be abolished and those previously issued will cease to have any legal status.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order, approved by parliament in 2005, is the biggest overhaul of fire safety legislation in decades consolidating nearly all existing legislation.

The new order simplifies, rationalises and consolidates existing fire safety legislation. It provides for a risk-based approach to fire safety allowing more efficient and effective enforcement by the fire and rescue service.
Responsibility for complying with the Fire Safety Order rests with the 'responsible person'. In a workplace, this is the employer and any other person who may have control of any part of the premises, for example, the occupier or owner. This can result in the 'responsible person' facing fines, or even manslaughter charges if the fire prevention measures are not implemented properly.

Company jumps for Charity
Nine employees of Food Industry Technical took a deep breath and jumped out of a plane for Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Six office staff and three engineers took part in tandem skydives on the 8th October 2006. The event took place at Netheravon Airfield, Salisbury.
Keith Stevens, Managing Director, thought up the idea as an alternative to a 'normal' team-building exercise-
"I wanted to do some team-building and this was a bit more extreme than go-karting or orienteering, and a good opportunity to raise money for a local charity"
The chosen charity was Guide Dogs for the Blind in Wokingham and so far the total raised is over £7000 and rising. The company paid for the skydiving fees resulting in all of the money raised going straight to the charity.
Due to the generosity of the company, staff at Food Industry Technical were invited to go along to the Wokingham Guide Dog Centre to find out more about how the charity is run and experience a blind folded walk with a trained Guide Dog. The participants were taken through an obstacle course with the guidance of Dempsey, a beautiful black Labrador. A big thank you to everyone who was involved, this was a fantastic experience and an insight to what blind or partially sited people have to overcome everyday.
Food Industry Technical will be sponsoring a puppy which will be walked in their local area and named by the members of staff.
The day the skydives were planed for, the 6th October, was the 75th anniversary of the Guide Dogs for the Blind charity but due to bad weather they were postponed until the 8th October. On the day the jumps took place there were concerns that it would be postponed again but luckily the wind died down enough for the jumps to be done.
There was a mixture of reactions after the jump with the majority wanting to go up again! Everyone said, however, that it was an experience of a life time and they will never forget it.
The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has generously sponsored them as well as all the staff at Netheravon Airfield for making it such a memorable event. |
